Eduardo Michelle Núñez Mendez (born June 15, 1987 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) is a Major League Baseball infielder for the New York Yankees. He was a non-drafted signee with the Yankees in 2004.[1] The Yankees view Núñez as a possible replacement at shortstop for Derek Jeter.[2]

Following the 2009 season, Núñez was added to the 40-man roster to protect him from the Rule 5 draft.[3] In 2010, he was named to the International League All-Star team[1] the postseason All-Star team,[4] and the Topps Triple-A All-Star Team.[5]

Núñez was called up to the majors for the first time on August 19, 2010 after Lance Berkman was placed on the 15-day DL.[6] Núñez debuted on the same day, replacing Derek Jeter in the 7th inning and fouling out in his only plate appearance. On August 21, Núñez recorded his first major league hit, a go-ahead RBI single into right field.[7] Nunez hit his first career home run versus the Chicago White Sox on August 28, 2010. He also stole his first career base the same day. Nunez was named Yankees minor league player of the year for 2010.[8] Núñez beat out Ramiro Peña for the utility infield position to start the 2011 season.[9]
